Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
